5 July to 15 August 2022: Public vote and Ministerial visits
Following strong applications from 42 local authorities across Britain in the competition to find a location for the headquarters of Great British Railways, six locations have been shortlisted.

About the voting stage
This stage of the competition gives you the opportunity to vote for your preferred location from the shortlist. The results will be used to measure the level of support for each place and will be considered as part of final decision making.
During this time, Government Ministers and GBRTT representatives will also visit each of the shortlisted towns and cities to gain a greater understanding of each place.

What will the Great British Railways’ national headquarters be like?
Great British Railways will be shaped and run by empowered teams in five regional divisions across the country, working together to deliver a single, integrated national network. This means the national headquarters is planned to be a lean business unit, with its staff mainly focused on supporting the regional divisions. Find out more in our FAQs.
Six criteria have been used to inform the selection process, so keep these in mind when casting your vote:
- Alignment to ‘levelling-up' objectives
- Connected and easy to get to across the UK
- Opportunities for Great British Railways
- Railway heritage and links to the network
- Value for money
- Public support
The building site will preferably use existing estate that is either publicly owned or already part of the public sector rail estate, although alternative proposals may be considered.
